Hiya folks, H here…

On the 1st March 2025 I attended my first ever Kings of War event- Kings of Herts. This event raises money for the local Primary school for supplies, which in my opinion is a fantastic cause.

I was initially really nervous, my Northern Alliance army was very lacking and I had only primed the majority as I was worried about it not being perfect and so I ended not painting them at all. However, I’ve since watched a youtube tutorial and I have been painting my army up a few infantry at a time. I’m saving the Frostclaw Ravens until last as I really want to do them justice.

The first round I played against Sands of Ahum. Now let me tell you I was not expecting to win, far from it in fact. Those Sands of Ahum, I had absolutely no chance however I did manage to get a couple of kills so, silver lining. I learnt so many things in this game, in each game that day really but specifically this game. I learnt the importance of placing your army in the beginning, having your dice in different colours and in batches of 10 for example 10 red dice, 10 blue dice, 10 green dice and 10 white dice. This makes it easier for you to quickly pick up the right amount of dice for the roll required.

We then broke for lunch and I popped to Tesco to grab me a meal deal and a tub of brownies because 8 mini brownies is just not enough, right?

My second game was against a Northern Alliance army and let me tell you this person’s army looked amazing!!! I wish I had taken pictures but I didn’t want to hold us up so just jumped straight into playing. It was great playing against another Northern Alliance Army, I mean sure they kicked my butt but it was such a learning experience and in this game I learnt the importance of list building and creating a tactic at the list building stage. When I was creating my list I just looked at what I had inputted into the companion website and hey presto my army was ready.

My third and final game was against another Sands of Ahum army and this time around I learnt how good certain units are on my list so I’m going to relook at my list and see what I can improve on.

I would definitely recommend that anybody new to playing Kings of War and who is not able to play casually due to not having an opponent, try attending a tournament. Normally at tournament settings, my brain turns into mush at about lunchtime but everybody was so encouraging and willing to give me tips and answer my questions instead of me having to figure out how to do things myself, which is usually why my brain turns into mush. They’re all such a lovely bunch and I’m looking forward to participating in the Doubles event on May 24th 2025.
